Centuries ago our ancestors painted on cave walls telling stories of their lives. These paintings are sometimes called pictographs.
Usually in January I do a rather scripted art challenge to kickstart my year. This year I refused to do that but chose instead to follow my intuition. What arrived was this series representing pictorially my love for and gratitude to the natural world. I worked intuitively, using my usual dye sublimation process, piecing together and cutting apart - reminiscent of quilting - which is a comfort to my heart. In the night it came to me (not all my night ideas are reasonable ideas!) to write poems to go with each. Having written them I am more inclined to call them word snippets as they do not reach the calibre of poems but they are perfect in their naivete. All in all this process was one of absolute and total gratitude and I hope that comes across as you view them.
I have intentionally left these pieces unmounted. They remain flexible and tactile. Imagine a piece of patent leather if you want a sense. They can be framed (no need for glass as they are varnished) or hung or set on a table as a mat. They can be cleaned with a wet cloth.
